KNIFE. Overall length: 15 1/2". Blade length: 10 1/2". This very well made bowie w/ a clip point blade was made by excellent craftsmen who truly mastered brass & woodwork. The blade, well honed, from possibly an old tool, tapers from 1 5/16" to 7/8"; where unbeveled a 2 1/2" clip occurs. Knife has great form & feel in the hand w/ shaped wood grip. Stylized bat wing cross guard shows an artistic flair, as well as the most unusual & distinctive skeletal brass mounts on leather scabbard body & long 4" belt hook. Sheath is reminiscent of classic circa 1840 Schively bowies. CONDITION: fine overall. Blade is gray/white; clean w/ pinprick pitting & tool marks. Brass cross guard, ferrule, capstan washer & scabbard mounts have dark mustard/chocolate colored patinas, 1 soldered seam at drag is partially open. Leather is sound & solid retaining about half of its original finish. Grip has hand worn patina & is solid w/ minor bruising. PROVENANCE: from the Wayne McNeese Collection.
