Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 42". This is a rare Ely Whitney contract musket that predates the War of 1812 for the state of New York. 4,000 Of these muskets were delivered between 1808-1812. Lock markings indicate this is a later production musket likely 1811-12. Marks near the breech include a "P" in a circle, "NY" & a heart. The lock is marked "N. HAVEN" in a scroll. Musket is original flint. Iron trigger guard, buttplate, sideplate, bbl. bands, nosecap & sling swivels. Iron ramrod appears to be correct. Full stock w/ inspector mark beside the sideplate. Mark is a wavy edge circle around "V / BY / J.M.". This indicates New York state inspection by John McLean. The number "28" is stamped on the butt just in front of the buttplate. CONDITION: bbl. has a dark slightly mottled patina. Lock has a gray mottled patina & is possibly lightly cleaned. Other iron parts have their original dark patina. Lock functions well & holds both full & half cock. Wood shows expected dents & dings but is generally quite strong. There is a tight 4 1/2" crack extending from the front of the lockplate to the bbl. channel. Bbl. channel has a few very minor losses. Bore is fair to good. (01-15510/BF). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,200.
