MUSKET WITH BAYONET. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 42". This Whitney contract musket was produced under the second contract for these muskets signed in 1830. Bbl. proofs are illegible but the date "1836" can be seen on the bbl. tang. Lock is marked "NEW HAVEN 1836" behind the hammer & "E. WHITNEY" w/ crossed arrow & quill in front of the hammer. Iron trigger guard, buttplate (stamped "US"), sideplate, bbl. bands, nosecap & sling swivel. Period iron ramrod. Full stock w/ visible cartouche behind the sideplate. Bayonet is an M1835 w/ "US" stamped on the face near the corner. Bayonet measures 20 3/4" overall w/ a 17 5/8" blade & a 2 5/8" socket. Bayonet is spuriously housed in a partial 45-70 bayonet scabbard body. CONDITION: bbl. & all iron parts have a dark patina. There is heavy pitting near the breech. Lock holds both full & half cock. Buttplate is also significantly pitted. Front sling swivel is missing. Stock shows wear & has expected dents & dings, along w/ a lg. gouge at the base near the toe. Ramrod is too short for this musket. Fair bore. Bayonet has an overall mottled, dark gray finish w/ areas of pitting scattered around the blade. "US" mark is partially obscured. Scabbard has no leather hanger & has an oxidized finish. (01-15516/BF). ANTIQUE. $600-800.
