Overall length of blade only: 33 1/2". Blade edge length: 27 1/4". Length w/ tsuka: 37". This is a very interesting WWII used katana featuring a blade w/ nearly 4 centuries of ancestral use. Blade has an irregular undulating hamon. Gilded brass habaki. There is a single brass seppa below the tsuba w/ a partial leather seppa added. Iron tsuba w/ a shrine design. Nakago has a single mekugi-ano. Nakago features Japanese characters on both sides. Characters are believed to indicate that the sword was made by Taira Shizunari of the Takada School working in the Bungo province in the year 1565 AD. Tsuka has an iron fuchi & kashira. White same w/ brown tsuka-ito. 2 Gilded brass menuki of 3 mum design. Saya is wood w/ a red brown leather covering in the WWII style featuring 3 snaps at the top. A braided leather sword hanger is attached to a single brass mounting ring on the saya. CONDITION: blade has been cleaned & shows light cleaned pitting primarily near the tip. Blade has several sm. nicks & shows evidence of improper sharpening. Tsuba, fuchi & kashira have a similar dark iron patina. Tsuka shows light to moderate wear w/ no losses. Saya shows scuffs to the leather. Hanger is a bit stiff. (02-11605/BF). $2,000-4,000.
