Marine, ship painting. Gouache on paper. 18 x 10 1/4 in. (Board). He was born in Mobile, Alabama, and moved to Miami, Florida. An African-American artist whose subjects were the ships and yachts that docked at the Miami city pier between 1921 and 1959. Among the financial moguls he painted for were the Rockefellers, the Morgans, Alfred Sloan, Charles Kettering, William Leeds, Swedish Industrialist Axel WennerGren, and Arthur Curtis James. Alabama born, Selby went to sea in sailing craft when he was a boy. He lost a leg in 1905 when a breaking towline so mangled his left leg that it had to be amputated. Has works in the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut. Well-listed "Old Florida" artist. Newly framed under museum glass.23 1/4 x 16 in. (framed)
Very good condition, freshly cleaned and touched up. When the auction initially started it was still at the restorers. The photos have since been updated and a frame has been added.
