This copy is a variant to the version registered in ICCU and in Edit16, which has the title: La Circe di Giouan Batista Gelli Accademico Fiorentino. Nuouamente accresciuta et riformata.

Second edition of this work by Gelli, that addresses the theme of the contrast between the senses and reason.
This is a series of ten philosophical and moral dialogues between Ulysses and the humans transformed into various animals, ranging from an oyster to an elephant, in which Circe sometimes joins.

Giambattista Gelli (1498-1563) was a Florentine man of letters, from an artisan background. He is known for his works of the 1540s, Capricci del bottaio and La Circe, which are ethical and philosophical dialogues. Other works were the plays La sporta (1543) and L'errore (1556).

Provenance: Handwritten ownership inscriptions at title-page (Francisci Cappellani ... [?]). Presence of some handwritten notes at text margins.

Condition

The title-page, originally lacking, is manuscript by an ancient hand. Rare traces of use to the binding. Presence of foxing, and brownings at some leaves. Overall, a good copy.
