GAMES AND TAROTS IN THE RENAISSANCE

Bargagli, Girolamo. Dialogo de' giuochi che nelle vegghie sanesi si usano di fare. Del Materiale Intronato. Venice: Gardane, 1581. [at colophon:] In Venetia: appresso Alessandro Gardane, 1581.

8vo (146x96 mm), contemporary vellum, pp. 288.

Very scarce edition of the refined and amusing Bargagli's small masterpiece on the intriguing or funny games played in the Tuscany summer evenings of the Renaissance period.

The vegghie senesi ("Sienese evenings") were a renowned part of the club of Intronati activities in which cultured word-games were a focus for intriguing interchange between men and women. 137 games and their variants are described, called for wit, verbal skill, and variety of response and enigmas.

Provenance: Nobiliar ring stamp at title-page, at the centre of printer's device.
