OVIDIO, PUBLIO NASO-NANNINI, REMIGIO. Epistole d'Ovidio di Remigio Fiorentino. Divise in due libri. In Venetia, Appresso i Farri, 1607.

12mo (122x70 mm), half calf on marble paper, gilt title at spine surrounded by linear decorations, yellow edges, pp. 311, (1). Xylographic headletters at the starting of each epistola.

Uncommon venetian edition of Ovid's epistles of famous abandoned women.

The Epistole of famous women by Ovid, better known as Heroides, represents the starting of a new gender beneath the elegiac production.

The poet gives voice to the heroines that, abandoned or separated from their men, due to an adverse fate, express pain and anger, together with the nostalgic memory of their happy love.

We find letters to protest against the absence of the lover (Penelope a Ulisse), for abandonment and betrayal (Arianna a Teseo), but also missives where the seducers attract their female preys, as suggested by Ovid in Ars amatoria, (Paride a Elena) and the resulting positive answers (Elena a Paride).

The Italian translation by Remigio Nannini (1521-1581) was completed in Ancona in December 1554 and printed many times along the XVI century. To make it easier the comprehension, each letter is introduced by an explanatory note.

Provenance: 1. Sepia ink ownership note Dons. J.e Berto[...] at title page, beside the printer device. 2. Ownership note Petri Pauli Riccio Vasco at lower margin of title page.
