Tasso, Torquato. Il re Torrismondo tragedia del sig. Torquato Tasso. Di nuouo in questa nostra vltima impressione con somma diligenza ricorretta. In Venetia (Venice): appresso Gio. Antonio, et Gio. Maria Misserini fratelli (Misserini), 1637.

8vo (148x75 mm), contemporary paperboards, pp. 116 [4, the last two are blank].

Extremely rare edition of Tasso's tragedy Re Torrismondo.

First published in 1587, the tragedy was represented only in 1618 in the Teatro Olimpico of Vicenza. For the American scholar Louise G. Clubb, Re Torrismondo is the cornerstone of the mannerist tragedy.

This work derives from Galealto re di Norvegia, (1573-4) an unfinished tragedy, which later was finished with this new title. It is influenced by Sophocles's and Seneca's tragedies, and tells the story of princess Alvida of Norway, who is forcibly married off to the Goth king Torrismondo, when she is devoted to her childhood friend, king Germondo of Sweden.

A very fine and unsophisticated copy, in its first binding.
