[together with:]

Franciosini, Lorenzo. Vocabulario espanol, e italiano en esta tercera impression corregido, y anadido por su verdadero auctor Lorenzo Franciosin florentin [...] Segunda parte. En Roma: en la emprenta dela Reu. Camera Apostolica, 1638.

2 volumes in large 8vo, contemporary limp vellum with handwritten title at spine, pp. [4], 834, [2].

Scarce third and most complete edition of Franciosini's Italian-Spanish and Spanish-Italian vocabulary, the basic tool for learning the Spanish language in Italy until the 19th century.

According to a practice already common at the time of Franciosini, the vocabulary (first published in 1620) is preceded by some basic rules «to read and write in Castilian language», that formed the outline of the Grammar published for the first time four years later. The importance of the dictionary is in the wealth of the words listed according to the scriptures more modern, and the thoroughness of the explanations given. This is not just a list of isolated terms: there are included phrases and sayings that still may be useful to translators from Spanish.

Franciosini is author of the first translation in Italian of Don Quixote, with the title L'ingegnoso cittadino Don Chisciotte della Mancia (Venice, 1622-1625) and of some operettas that contributed in a decisive way the penetration of Castilian in Italy.
