JUNE 1495 THE PROSE MODEL IN THE RENAISSANCE

MARCUS TULLIUS CICERO.Epistolae ad familiares. [WITH:] MERULA, GIORGIO. In epistulam ad Lentulum Spintherem. [WITH:] POLIZIANO, ANGELO. In nonnulla epistolarum loca interpretatio. Venice: Simon Bevilaqua, 26 June 1495.
Folio (300 x 200), 18th century stiff vellum, five raised bands spine with gilt decorations, gilt-lettered ochre label, red edges, marbled fly-leaves, ff. [232]. Text in Latin, Roman types 8:81R and 16:112R, 44-62 lines of commentary surrounding text. Woodcut initials, capital spaces.

VERY RARE EDITION OF CICEROÃ'S LETTERS TO HIS FRIENDS AND HIS FAMILY, CONSIDERED THE PERFECT MODEL OF WRITING IN THE RENAISSANCE AND THE MOST RELIABLE SOURCES OF INFORMATION FOR THE PERIOD PRECEDING THE FALL OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC.

CONDITION: Occasional staining, small wormholes on a few leaves occasionally affecting the odd letter. A very fine copy, the only circulating copy on the market for many decades.

PROVENANCE: Some ownership's inscriptions (faded) on title-page.
