NOVEMBER 1500 THE ACCOUNT OF ALL ROMAN WARS

APPIANUS ALEXANDRINUS. Historia Romana. Venice: Cristoforo De Pensis, 20 November 1500.
Folio (304 x 205 mm), attractive Renaissance binding with blind-toolings on both covers, three raised bands spine (spine-ends restored), first fly-leaf rene-wed, ff. [180]. Text in Latin, Roman type 7:107/109R, Gothic type 9:160, 45-46 lines.

FINE VENETIAN EDITION OF APPIANUS ALEXANDRINUS' ACCOUNT OF ALL EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL ROMAN WARS.

The edition, translated by Petrus Decembrius and divided in two parts, contains the account of the external wars against Hannibal, Syrians, Parthians, Illyrians and Mithridates and that of the Roman Civil Wars, plus an appendix with the History of Celts.
The most important remnants of Appian's work are the five books on the Civil Wars, the only comprehensive, meticulous source available on an extremely significant historical period, during which Roman politics were in turmoil because of factional strife. Only five edition of Appianus were published in 15th century.

CONDITION: A negligible rip (repaired) at inner blank margin of title and very light water-stains and foxing at some corners; a fine and crisp copy.

PROVENANCE: 1. Many annotations at blank margins. 2. Ownership's inscription Firmi Emptus an: 1751 die 6 Martii a Nicolao Buchi at rear pastedown.
