"Poet and the Donkey" is a tale in the genre of May Sarton's "MISS PICKTHORN AND MR. HARE", humorous and lyrical, and is set in the same imaginary village in New Hampshire. Once again she treats a serious theme with a delicate touch.
This time her central figures are an aging poet, Andy Lightfoot, and a donkey, Whiffenproof, whom Andy borrows for the summer. Andy is in the doldrums because he has lost his muse. Whiffenproof, too, has a problem - her arthritic ankles keep her from running free. As the tale unfolds we watch these two innocents coming to know and understand each other, until at the end they indulge in some wild capers in which the whole village joins...
