Jabez Holmes, Revolutionary War Veteran, Ambrotype, quarter-plate ambrotype identified as Jabez Holmes, Revolutionary War veteran. Holmes was a sergeant in Captain Stanton's company and served in the Eighth Regiment of Connecticut soldiers with Lt. Oliver Smith at New York, from September 8 to Nov. 17, 1776. At that time he was twenty-three years old. (This biographical information found in the Record of the Service of Connecticut, in the War of the Revolution, compiled and published by order of the General Assembly at Hartford in 1889.) He also took part in the defense of Stonington on Aug. 10, 1812. When the town was bombarded by an English man-of-war under the command of Commodore Hardy, the only defense the village had was an earth-work enclosure about six feet high and two cannons carrying eighteen pound balls. The English were defeated and withdrew. Soon after, the war ended.
