3rd century AD. A silver crossbow brooch of early type comprising a crossbar with ribbed ends, knop above the deep square-section bow, three radiating knops to the lower end, chamfered rectangular footplate with catch to the reverse, hinged pin. Cf. Mackreth, D.F. Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, Oxford, 2011, item 10404. 11 grams, 57mm (2 1/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. []
