CARNOT LAZARE - DIRECTORY: (1753-1823) French Physicist and politician. Known as the Organizer of Victory in the French Revolutionary Wars. A good L.S., `Carnot pres.´, one page, folio, Paris, 1st of May 1796, to General and future Marshal Berthier, in French. The partially printed document bears at the heading a very attractive vignette of the Directoire Executif. Carnot, in his capacity as President of the Directory, sends his congratulations to his correspondent, stating `..the national recognition for the actions honouring the defenders of the Republic, and to congratulate you for having so intensely contributed to the multiple successes obtained our brave army you are serving..´ Countersigned by Jean Joseph Lagarde (1755-1839) in his capacity as Secretary of the Directory. With blank integral leaf. A very small tear to the upper edge and a very small hole not affecting the text or signatures. With remnants of former affixing to the fourth blank page. G £150-200
