President Taft and Panama Canal Engineer GoethalsBrandon, Panama7" x 10"Rare oversized cabinet card photograph of President William Howard Taft and Chief Engineer George W. Goethals, taken in Panama during the construction of the Panama Canal. The photograph has the photoraphers imprint "Brandon Panama" at the lower right mount. Taft oversaw the construction of the canal as Secretary of War, and Goethals supervisd the actual construction. This image was taken on one of several visits Taft made to the Canal, likely in early 1909. Goethal went on to become a United States General. A bridge connecting New Jersey to Staten Island, NY is named after him. Albeit a published image, the only examples we could source were housed in institutions. The mount has some stains, the image is fine.
