An attractive and scarce 1853 Colton map of Washington and Oregon, inclusive of the modern-day states of Idaho, Montana & Wyoming. This map appeared in the 1856 Colton 2-volume Atlas of the World, published by J. H. Colton. Map published by Johnson & Browning. Colton maps of this region exhibit dramatic changes from year to year, indicating actual changes in the expansion and settlement of the area. In this particular map Washington and Oregon extend fully to the Continental Divide where they encounter a Nebraska Territory that extends north all the way to Canada. Of particular interest on this map are the explorers’ routes including the proposed Stevens route of the Pacific Railroad. Gives considerable attention to Indian tribes, passes, and forts. Extremely light water stain in lower left margin (does not go into map). Four bb-size sulfur spots. Great hand coloring. Small bit of print loss at outside edge of lower left frame as published. 12.75 x 15.75.
