From the increasingly scarce 1848 New Universal Atlas by S. Augustus Mitchell. Pre-1850 Mitchell maps are becoming quite scarce. Image of Wisconsin Territory the year it became a state. In subsequent years the borders at the northeast would change somewhat. Two thirds of the state is dominated by just five counties. Delineates the fabled “Carver’s Claim,” an expanse of 10,000 acres that explorer Jonathan Carver claimed he had been given deed to but was later denied by U. S. courts. This all decades earlier so it’s odd to be portrayed so prominently. Fairly well centered, which is not always the case for this map. Good strong print and vivid original hand-coloring. Couple of small spots in image. Three small repaired edge tears. Light edge toning. 13.5 x 16.
