IMAO KEINEN was born in Kyoto in 1845. His original name was Imao Isaburo. He studied ukiyo-e painting with Umegata Tokyo and other Japanese styles with Suzuki Hyakunen. By 1880, Keinen had become a painting instructor at the Kyoto Prefecture School of Painting, and then in 1904 became a member of the Art Committee of the Imperial Household. In 1919 Keinen became a Member of the Imperial Art Academy. An important Japanese style painter, Keinen specialized in Kacho-ga (Flower and Bird prints) with realistic detail. He is best known for "Bird and Flower Albums by Keinen", 1891, a set of 4 volumes, each containing 40 prints, published by Nishimura Soemon, and for his series of kacho-e designs created for the Shima Art Company in the early part of the 20th century. Keinen died in 1924.
