1920. Canvas, oil. 73x63.5 cmSigned and dated lower left: Walter-KurauEXPERTISE:Kristiāna Ābele – Art historian, PhD in art history (Dr.art), senior researcher at Institute of Art History of the Latvian Academy of Art,Dzintra Temerova – Easel-Painting Restorer – Old Master (Certificate No. 292), Art and Antique Object Expert (Certificate No. 293),Liāna Liepa – Art and Antique Object Expert (Certificate No. 291).In 1909 Johann Walter - Kurau painted the portrait of his student Minna Köhler - Roeber (1883-1957). Art experts appreciate the painting as one of the outstanding jewels of the artists works. Portrait of Minna Roeber, born Grabner (1857-1938), painted more than 10 years later, is the work inspired by respect and symphaty. A noble and beautiful lady, mother of Minna Köhler – Roeber is depicted on the painting. The artist retained his best art qualities of the 1920ies in this painting – the precise stroke, the delicate contours of forms, the background and details in the manner of Paul Cezanne – everything is withheld in a cool shimmering colouring interwoven by light. Thinking of Cezanne, it shoud be noted that excatly in this period J.Walter proved himself and his pupils, “that he is able to paint with Cezanne comprehension, that is, giving to his works evenly classic togetherness and harmony, as Cezanne was trying and realized during his lifetime" (R. F. Hartmanis, Tā viss kļūst gleznojams, 2009). The portrait belonged to Minna Köhler – Roeber’s family to the present day, it is an artistically high-quality, perfectly preserved original painting by Johann Walter - Kurau.Dzintra Temerova, Art and Antique Object Expert, Easel-Painting Restorer – Old Master.
