LIMITED EDITION print, numbered: 57/90. Kokei uses extremely thin ganpi paper for his work. After a limted number of prints have been made, Kokei destroys the printing blocks by carving his name across them. - Most of his prints are bust portraits reminiscent of the type developed by Sharaku in the late 18th century. On the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the Kabuki-za in 1988, the Pacific Asia Musuem, Pasadena, Ca., honored Kokei with a major exhibition of his work.- The photo taken in the 1980s (not part of the lot) shows the 'real' actor, Ennosuke III.
