Lot 0388
French School, 1843, "Portrait of Nicolas Jacques Demarine" and "Portrait of Catherine Sophie Desvignes Demarine", 2 oils on canvas, signed and dated lower left and right respectively, labels identifying sitters and period French framing labels on reverse of frames, each 20 1/2 in. x 16 1/2 in., framed alike. (2 pcs.) Note: Catherine Sophie Desvignes was first married to Charles Gaspard Chachouin, with whom she had two children, Charles Nicolas and Charlotte Sophie. After Chachouin’s death in 1799, she married Nicolas Jacques Demarine. Demarine was the Mayor of Noisy-le-Roi, a town about 15 miles west of Paris, from 1808-1813 and 1820-1834. In this charming pendant pair of portraits, the couple is portrayed in a lovely drawing room decorated in green and peach tones with a herringbone wood floor. Monsieur Demarine is depicted looking directly at the viewer, having paused in his morning toast and newspaper. Madame Demarine, dressed in a complementary green and pink dress and bonnet, also gazes directly at the viewer with her feet resting on a cushion.
