Lot 0398
American Classical Carved Mahogany Sofa, c. 1820, New York, scrolled crest rail with inset figured panel, Grecian-scrolled and reeded arms and seat rail, elaborately carved feather and scroll brackets, paw feet, casters, poplar secondary wood, period-appropriate upholstery in damask haircloth from John Boyd Textiles, London, reverse retains fragment of old label, h. 34 in., w. 91 in., d. 26 in. Note: The sofa offered here is a closely related form to Grecian sofas made by New York cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe. Featuring the same proportions, scrolled crest rail and arms, reeded seat rail, and feathered lion’s paw feet, the sofa here is nearly identical to a sofa illustrated in The World of Duncan Phyfe by Elizabeth Feld and Stuart P. Feld, differing only by the carved decoration along the crest rail on the Feld example.
