Lot 0128
A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON, CIRCA 1825, PROBABLY IVAN PESHEKHONOV. On the right are depicted Saints Constantine and Helen, and on the left, identified by the finely inscribed abbreviation above her head, is The Holy Virgin Martyr Alexandra. At top center an image of the Holy Visage. The overall quality of painting is of the highest degree. The clothing is finely shaded and the gem encrusted crowns and oval gem broaches worn by both Constantine and Helen are in keeping with this distinctive feature found on icons whose origin is found in the Peshekhonov workshop. The finely inscribed titles identify the Emperor and Empress as the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Emperor Constantine and the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Empress Helen. It is Empress Helen who in the 4th century on a pilgrimage to the holy places is credited with the discovery of the true and life-giving cross of Jesus Christ. This is why she is depicted, as in the offered icon, holding a large wooden cross. A very fine icon of the highest quality. 13 inches x 10.5 inches (33 x 26.5 cm).
