16th century Italian book, MACROBIUS Ambrosius Aurelius Theodosius Macrobii Ambrosii Aurelii Theodosii, viri consularis, & illustris, In Somnium Scipionis, Lib. II Saturnaliorum, Lib. VII. Venetis, Ioan. Gryphivs Excvdebat, 1558. 567 pages. Old vellum, possibly original cover. Raised spine with author and title. Macrobius was a late Roman grammarian and philosopher who wrote several eclectic works that were read in the Middle Ages. His Expositio In Somnium Scipionis (Commentary on the Dream of Scipio by Cicero) is an extract from the sixth book of Cicero's De Repulica. Macrobius' commentary on this work includes geographical theories. This work contains the famous Macrobius woodcut world-map(pg. 154) where Europe, Africa, and Asia are shown, with climatic zones according to the theory of Parmenides, and two zones close to the poles subject to frigid air. Also contains 7 woodcut diagrams. In the Saturnalia, an account of discussions held at the house of Vettius Praetextatus during the feast of the Saturnalia, Macrobius discusses the choice and proper use of food and drink, describing the courses at a banquet with their appropriate wines. Book 5 includes substantial text in Greek. Condition - Very good condition with some losses to edges of cover and some interior written notes and inscriptions. 6 1/2" Height x 4 1/2" Width.
