Lot 0183
Charming early 19th century image of children picking flowers and catching butterflies. The rich color and amber glow was achieved by the reverse glass print method, in which the soaked print is bonded to the glass, the paper mostly abraded away leaving only the print, and the back of the printed glass varnished and painted. The technique was employed by amateurs and professional artists alike during the 19th century, in imitation of reverse-glass painting. This example is presented in its original antique lemon gold frame. Frame, approx. 7 7/8" x 9 3/8"
