This intricately hand carved natural nephrite jade bi disc dates to the 17th to 18th century. The carving is archaistic with strong reference and stylistic influence paid in homage to ancient Chinese jade carving. To one side the surface is carved with nine chi tigers and on the other a grain pattern amidst a border of dragons. It measures approximately 3 7/8" in diameter 3/16" thick (99.0mm x 5.2mm) and weighs approximately 108.2 grams. This spectacular late Ming to early Qing Dynasty jade bi is translucent across most of the disc as shown in one of the photographs. There is some color variation and inclusions to the natural green nephrite jade. At least two similar example nephrite bi discs from this period have sold at Christies Auctions.
