Description: A Chinese embroidered robe à l'Anglaise, the satin early 18th century, probably altered from a sack-back or wrapping robe, finely worked with couched peacock feather strands Tree of Life patterns with parrots and other exotic birds, butterflies, lotus blossom, tulips, lead-weighted sleeves, trimmed with green and burgundy chenille braid, original pocket slits to skirt

Condition Report: Fair condition. Large brown stain to front right of skirt panel, some of the couched silver thread tendrils have come undone. Slightly soiled appearance generally but colours are good. The embroidery is superb but the dress is heavily altered - the front bodice panels have been cut at waist level. Top of right sleeve - the seam needs re-stitching. Satin is frayed and split at both underarms. Front skirt panel – hem has been raised. Brown stain rear hem edge approx. 22cm wide. Faint brown stain 2.5 x 3cm concealed within skirt pleats rear left back. Original pocket slits extant.
