George Armfield (1810-1893) was a prolific animal artist who lived through most of the Victorian era. Having married three times and supporting seven children, he had to be. As Mary Wingfield, author of “A Dictionary of Sporting Artists: 1650-1990” put it, “his prolificacy was not confined to his paintings.”; Today, Armfield is regarded as one of Victorian England’s finer animal artists and his work as sought-after as it was in his own lifetime. He exhibited more than 100 times at the major London venues, including the Royal Academy. His works can be found in many public collections.; Not only did he create a large body of work on his own, both signed and unsigned, but paintings associated with his work can today be found in the following categories for George Armfield: “in the school of,” “in the circle of,” and “follower of.” Although this piece is unsigned, as is the case for most artists, his singular style and unique tight brushstrokes are his signature. Furthermore, this painting shows an original gallery label on the back with his name as the artist, and an original nameplate on the front of the frame. In any case, the quality and skill of George Armfield is rarely mistaken.; This is a work of exceptional quality. The artist’s use of light is just mesmerizing. Not only can you see the wonderfully depicted expressions of the dogs, but their fur is painted marvelously. Although the white terrier has an inquisitive look on his face as he watches the caged mouse, the others are glaring at the animal. His whole body is clearly on edge as he ponders what action to take.; The background is painted in Armfield’s traditional style of dark colors with patches suggesting the interior of a barn. As with many of his paintings, the principle focus is on the dogs and their expressions.; This painting is housed in its original custom-made wood and gesso elaborate Victorian frame. The frame is hand-finished, and the nuances of the hand-applied gilding is apparent. At the time the painting was professionally cleaned, according to a card by a conserver on the back, the original nameplate appears to have been re-gilded. An original gallery label with the artist’s name on it can be found on the pair to this painting being sold separately in my shop.; From a private collection, this is one of the best quality paintings by this artist that I have seen anywhere in some time. With Armfield’s skillful painting of these terriers, his talent for aptly capturing the dogs’ personalities and the fabulous original frame, this piece would be a fine and decorative addition to anyone’s home.; It measures 14-3/8 inches wide by 12-3/8 inches high, including the frame.
