Pair of George III Sterling Silver Sauce Tureens

hallmarked London, 1779-1780, by William Holmes (1732-1805; free 1765), each of oval form with beaded rim and arched, reeded handles, the fitted domed lid with toupie finial, the whole raised on a conforming waisted pedestal foot, engraved on the body with a crest of a ram's head cabossed.
h. 6", l. 9", w. 4-1/2"; 33.24 total t. oz.

Condition

Each tureen has a slight, shallow fingerprint dent on the body opposite the crest, and a slight compression dent where the finial meets the lid. Otherwise in generally good condition with the expected surface scuffs, scrapes and dings. Wear to the engraved crest. Hallmarked (on the underside edge of the foot) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "d" for 1779-1780; and 4) the "WH" maker's mark of William Holmes; marks very good, though some are struck so close to the edge that part is missing. The underside of the lids part-marked with the lion passant and maker's mark; these marks worn but legible.
