Provenance: Ex-collection William E. Groves, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Literature: Louisiana Painters and Paintings from the Collection of W. E. Groves, 1971, illustrated p. 57; Rudolph, William Keyse, "Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (1790-1864) in France and Louisiana," PhD Dissertation, Bryn Mawr College, 2003, pp. 318-322.
Notes: In 1834, Jean Joseph Vaudechamp painted two identical portraits of "Marie-Joseph Guenard, Madame Domingo de Fleitas." Both portraits were eventually donated by family members to museums. One portrait is in the collection of Musee du Nouveau Monde, La Rochelle, France and the other is in The Historic New Orleans Collection. Evidently a member of the family commissioned Hortaire J. Guenard to paint a third portrait. Guenard appropriately inscribed the portrait as being "After Vaudechamp."
