A gorgeous carved wooden bowl with a sweeping form, a deep central cavity that is smoothed to a high sheen, and elaborately incised zoomorphic swirling motifs inlaid with seventeen discs of abalone. The bowl stands on a small foot at its center. The Maori are renowned for their wood carving, which often takes on fascinating, sinuous forms, like this bowl.
