Bui Xuan Phai is Van Gogh of Vietnam and lived in poeverty throughout his life even though he was an established artist during the Vietnam War. He studied with Victor Tardieu at the École des Beaux-Arts (College of Fine Arts or Truong My Thuat Dong Duong). His teachers included famous French painters such as Joseph Inguimberty, Jonchere, and Alix Ayme. His classmates included Le Pho, To Ngoc Van, Nguyen Sang, Nguyen Phan Chanh, Nguyen Gia Tri, Nguyen Tuong Lan, and Le Thi Luu.He is famous for the paintings of Hanoi Old Quarter or ancient streets. He also was commissioned after the economic reform to paint a series of painting about Vietnamese traditional opera Tuong. He is known best known of all Vietnamese painters. As a Vietnamese Van Gogh, he epitomizes for the Vietnamese the lone artist suffering for his art: he lost his teaching position at the Haoi College of Fine Arts in 1957 for his support of Nhan Van Literary Journal.
