This is an iconic map of the Western US. Upper California extends eastward to the Rio Grande and beyond while the Oregon Territory extends to the Continental Divide. The map shows the winding Oregon route (Oregon Trail), the Great Basin here called the Great Interior Basin of California as well as Indian tribes and villages and forts. Plenty other settlement and topographical detail is offered. The At lower left is the inset Map of the Columbia River from the Cascades to the Pacific Ocean. The US/Canadian boundary is shown as it is today, with the notation Boundary of 1846. This is Mitchell's map based largely on John C. Fremont's map of 1845.
