Ink sketch on brown paper sketchbook cover, Tahitian boy, signed* with the initials PGO, (Paul Gauguin, 1848-1903). Approximately 6 x 4 1/2 inches. Part of a small sketchbook containing over 100 drawings, sketches, and watercolors. Overall good condition. Unframed for inspection and post-auction shipping.

Preston Hall Gallery sold a number of works from this sketchbook, both at auction and via private sale. This cover sketch (one of several variations we have seen) is one of the last remaining sketches from the sketchbook and has not been offered for sale before. We expect to add other sketches to the present auction from this same sketchbook over the next week.

Provenance: Formerly property from a private Southwest collector.

Preston Hall Gallery sold a work attributed to Paul Gauguin on March 10, 2015, from the same collection (but different sketchbook) as the present lot. Subsequently, that drawing was authenticated by the Wildenstein Foundation and sold at Sotheby's, Paris, on June 1, 2016, Lot 79, in the amount of $33,428.
