Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 BCE. A cast bronze openwork cage bell with a multi-bar form. At its top is a beautiful abstract bird finial that is perforated through the legs for suspension. The bell stands on three tiny feet on the underside of the cage. A small ovoid stone inside the bell allows you to shake it and hear a metallic sound. The openwork shape and delicacy of the bird are testaments to the skill of Luristan metalsmiths. Size: 2.4" W x 4.2" H (6.1 cm x 10.7 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection

Pretty dark teal patina, lightly mottled. Top of bell has been repaired where it meets the bird, as has the side of the bird's head, but these repairs are very well done and difficult to discern.
