Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed Region, ca 800 to 1200 CE. A chilling reminder of the fate that the loser in hand-to-hand combat faced in ancient Costa Rica! A skillfully carved human head mortar representing the "trophy" that was removed from the loser with a deep depression at the upper end so that it could be used as a ceremonial mortar as well as another depression on the underside, presumably to make a balanced form. Carved of volcanic basalt with boldly delineated facial features. Size: 7.25" W x 8.5" H (18.4 cm x 21.6 cm)
Provenance: Ex-private , San Francisco, CA Collection
