These original photos were taken by Tom Rockwell, Norman's son, in the 1950's at Smith's Cash Grocery Store in Arlington, Vermont. At that time, the Smiths wanted to give something back to the community, so once a year they would have the butcher sew one, five and ten dollar bills to live chickens. Then they would climb out on the roof, and throw the chicken into the crowd below, and a few lucky folks get some extra cash and a free meal. The last picture shows one the proud winners. The photos each have "Tommy Rockwell Arington, Vermont" in pencil, probably in Tom's own hand. One has written in green"If published, please give credit to Tommy Rockwell" They were probably given to the local paper.most are 14" x 11"
