Two (2) Southern, likely Tennessee, pieced and appliqued quilts, late 19th century. 1st item: East TN pieced and appliqued quilt, Princess Feather pattern variant with cheddar yellow and red design on ivory backing. Signed in ink one corner on back "Matt D. Greene From Grandma Baker". Geneology research by Cindy Stuart, Certified Appraiser of Quilted Textiles, found that this quilt is probably from Kyles Ford, Hancock County, Tennessee. Maker was Rebecca Banner Baker, b. 26 August 1862 Lee County, VA, d. 10 Feb 1941. Her grandson was Matt David Greene, Jr., born 1 May 1919 in Kyles Ford, Hancock County, TN, d. 10 June 1999. 84" x 69". Late 19th century. 2nd item: Southern pieced and appliqued quilt, Greek Cross pattern variant with brown blocks, pink crosses, ivory triangles, green calico binding and ivory backing. Signed in black marker one corner on back, "Fred Smelcer". 83" x 62". Late 19th century/early 20th century.(Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)

Condition

1st item: One-quarter inch tear on binding near one corner. Few small stains, largest 3/8" L. 2nd item: Few scattered stains, largest: 1" x 1 1/2".
