COLT 3rd MODEL DRAGOON .44 REVOLVER, STOCK SLOTS

Lot 0252
SN 11936, MFG 1851, all matching serial numbers including the wedge. 7 1/2" .44 caliber barrel with very good bore. Scarce with back strap cut for SHOULDER STOCK. There are 3 patterns of stock attachments for the Colt 3rd Model Dragoon. This gun takes the first pattern stock that attaches via two prongs. It is estimated that 1200-1500 3rd Model Dragoons were fitted for stocks, and of that number about 150 had the first pattern type cut back strap. In addition most Dragoons cut for stocks had iron back straps, and only a few had brass back straps like this example. The gun has smooth gray metal with traces of finish in protected places. Markings are nice. The top barrel flat is marked with Colt's New York address. The left side of frame is marked "Colt's Patent, U.S." The cylinder is marked "Model USMR and Colts Patent. It retains about 50% of the Texas Ranger and Indian fight scene and a partial W.L. Ormsby "signature". There is light scattered pitting on the cylinder. The walnut one piece grips are very nice, and there is a slight impression where a stock was once attached. Action works, cylinder indexes and locks up. Overall this is a solid original example of a scarce version of the Colt 3rd Model Dragoon. Antique, Very Good
