Item Details
Description
Visually, a very strong and attractive 1830 American Needlework Sampler by Roxana Holmes. Try as I might, there were just too many Roxana Holmes born between 1815 and 1820 to pinpoint exactly which girl made this piece. But it definitely is American in origin, probably one of the New England States or New York. The sampler is large, measuring 19" x 17" (sight) and is framed in an appropriate but mid-20th century wooden frame with a narrow gold liner (overall frame size is 20" x 18").; The sampler include Roxana's name and the date "AD 1830" along with a religious verse: "To me O Lord be thou the way/To me be thou the truth/To me my Saviour be the life/Though Guardian of my youth./So shall that way be my delight/That truth shall make me free/That life shall raise my from the dead/And then I will live to thee." A Google search credits the verse to Leigh Richmond, an 18th Century English Minister who wrote sacred poems popular in Sunday School teachings. Flanking the verse are 2 columns with flowering vines and next to the left column is a very well-stitched young girl holding a spray of flowers. There are 3 renditions of the alphabet and one set of numbers., along with a bold floral and vine border of large round flowers (roses?). The entire sampler is done in silk thread in greens, pinks and browns; all colors have held up very well.; The sampler is in excellent condition. There are no stains, holes, tears, etc. and the only stitch loss is in the saw-tooth border that forms an inner frame for the sampler. Additional pictures can be made available if you are interested in seeing something close-up.
