“You are not superior just because you see the world in an odious light.”
― François-René de Chateaubriand
‘Atala’ is a short novel by French author François-René de Chateaubriand, a work that was an important work of Romanticism. It follows the story of travels and voyages in North America, encounters with Cherokee Indians, wilderness exploration, European missionaries in America, and themes of forbidden love.
This late 19th-century edition is beautifully illustrated with the art of Gustave Doré. It was translated out of the original French into English by James Spence Harry, from Didot’s edition of his works.
