18th century good size Japanese sword iron tsuba with raised and inlaid decoration of Shoki the Demon Queller looking through a round window at a terrified oni (mischievous little demon) hiding under a large woven straw hat, the back of the tsuba showing a large wooden club. Excellent crisp work, superb faces, oni is inlaid with copper, gilding. Came from the Collection of St. John University in Queens, NY, old museum number inside the nakago (central opening for the blade), beautiful patina, wonderful feel of age. Height 2 15/16 inches.
