Ex Stanley Paul Sax Collection, Sotheby's Auction No.7087. Jan 1998. Lot 260. It is believed that the painting is a memorial to a deceased ship's officer, with a ship bearing the British flag and the base of a monument in the background. the second painting is the officer's wife with (presumably) the same monument in the left background. Each painting measures about 5 5/8 x 4 1/4 inches. Both are mounted within a mid-19th-century gold leaf molded frame. Both paintings in good to very good condition with moderate surface abrasions, moderately dark toning.
