A museum quality pair of very large high carat gold and garnet cabochon Ancient Roman earrings dating to the 4th century AD. These genuine Ancient Roman earrings are a very rare find.
Typical of the era the earring fittings were designed as two lengths of gold wire which were twisted together to secure them to the ear. In modern times solid 18K yellow gold wire shepherd hooks have been added so that these ancient earrings can easily be worn if one wishes. The hooks have been added without any alteration of the earrings themselves and could be removed if desired.
These very large Ancient Roman earrings measure 2" long by 1/2 wide by 1 1/16" deep (50mm x 12mm x 27mm) not including the added modern hooks and they weigh 17.35 grams for the pair.
Each earring is set with two teardrop cabochons of earth mined natural red garnet. These ancient earrings are handmade from shaped sheets of gold and hollow gold balls which were fused together. There is slight variation between each earring as the pair were of course handmade in Roman times using the technology of the day.
These ancient earrings are in wearable condition which is quite impressive for large handmade gold earrings more than 1600 years old which have survived excavation. There is some wear to the garnet cabochons and some relatively minor distortion and dents, there is minor loss of gold from the very tip of one earring. There are soil remnants which have been left undisturbed, this could be easily cleaned off if desired by rinsing with pure water and the use of a soft watercolor artists brush.
All in all in remarkably good condition for ancient gold earrings of this kind, suitable for display they may also be worn.
