A Very rare, old and interesting wooden dance mask from the Dan peoples, Cote D'Ivoire, Africa. Carved wood,with a black painted surface and a deep well handled surface patina, with well worn regalia holes.The mask has an impressive Provenance.Exhibited: Meadow Brook Art Gallery, Rochester, Michigan, February 1-March 3, 1968.Detroit Historical Museum, January 16-June 16, 1978.Wayne State University, July 1980-January 1981.Ex Collection Governor and Mrs G. Mennen Williams. Mr Williams was appointed Secretary of State over African Affairs by President John F Kennedy. Author of the Book "Africa for the Africans" Published in 1969.Governor Williams was also elected to the Michigan Supreme court and was its Chief Justice from 1970 - 1987. The mask was also in the Collection of The Detroit Institute of the Arts Museum from 1988. The mask measures 9.75 x 6 inches. (The mask does not include a display base., the stand shown can be included, however it is not a custom fit)
