A JAMES W. TUFTS LARGE SILVER PLATE COVERED COLD WATER URN, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, CIRCA 1880-1900, of tapering cylindrical form, the cover of slightly domed form surmounted by a stylized floral blossom finial, the urn with polished silver plated band at the top over matte finished body with a band of polished vertical reeds at the base, fitted with a plated brass spigot manufactered by Landers, Frary & Clark of New Britain, Connecticut, raised on four Aesthetic Style feet with reticulated stylized floral decoration, the interior fitted with a removable plate with diamond shape cut outs centering a circular cut out, stamped on the bottom "JAMES W. TUFTS, BOSTON, WARRANTED, QUADRUPLE PLATE" centering a "T" within radiating points. Height: 14 3/4" Width: 11 3/8" Depth: 12 1/2" NOTE: James W. Tufts was also involved in the introduction and development of the carbonated water industry in America, leading to the establishment of Soda Fountains across the country. It is very possible that this large urn was originally designed to be used in such a commercial setting.


In overall good condition with scratching and minor gouging on the sides, rubbing and loss to plating; top possibly not original to the piece
