Description
25. The Nursery "Alice", rare First Edition, presentation copy inscribed by Lewis Carroll's sister. Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge (Lewis Carroll). The Nursery "Alice". London: Macmillan and Co., 1889. Quarto. First Edition. Color frontispiece and 19 color illustrations by John Tenniel. Original cloth-backed color pictorial boards illustrated by E. Gertrude Thomson, yellow endpapers. Presentation copy inscribed by Carroll's sister, "For Vivian – with L. Dodgson's love. Mar. 19, 91". Unpublished original photograph of Theo Heaphy, Vivian's mother, by Dodgson tipped-on a printed leaf, inscribed by Ed. Russell Morris, "This book was given by Charles Dodgson to Theo's little child". One of twelve copies specially bound as samples for the American market, with the title and advertisements unpriced. Dodgson needed copies for presentation, but the 1890 edition was not ready yet, very few if any of these actually made it to America, and most stayed with him. These were probably at "The Chestnuts", Dodgson's house in Guildford. For most of 1891 Dodgson was sick and remained in Oxford, but Theo Heaphy knew the Dodgson sisters, and it is likely that Charles instructed his siblings to give the books away. 10,000 sets of sheets were printed by Edmund Evans but Dodgson rejected the entire edition in sheets, as the pictures were "far too bright and gaudy"; he instructed that they should be reprinted (letter to Macmillan, June 23. 1889). The recipient, Vivian, was the son of Theodosia Heaphy (b. 1859), one of Dodgson's favorite child-friends and daughter of portrait painter, Thomas Heaphy. Fine. The condition of this first issue, 1 of 12 copies, is equal or better than any copy of the second issue so commonly found on the market. Housed in a custom ½ red morocco clamshell box. $10,000 – $15,000
