39. Goldfinger, First Edition inscribed by Ian Fleming to William Plomer, the book's dedicatee. Fleming, Ian. Goldfinger. Jonathan Cape, London, (1959). Octavo. First British Edition, first impression. Inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper, "To William, This oak tree from that acorn! Affectionately, Ian." The book is dedicated to Ian Fleming's friend, William Plomer (1903-1973), and carries the printed dedication "To my gentle Reader William Plomer". Born William Charles Franklyn Plomer, he was a novelist, editor, poet, biographer, autobiographer, and writer of librettos in collaboration with English composer Benjamin Britten. Fleming and Plomer met in 1929 at a literary party in Cheyne Walk, and Fleming's wife, Ann, said that Plomer was one of the very few people Ian could relax around. Plomer was later Fleming's reader at Jonathan Cape. Publisher black cloth with embossed skull design with gilt coin designs and gilt lettered spine. Upper front board gently bumped, touch of rubbing. Dust jacket shows only slightest wear at spine panel ends. A bright, fresh copy. A Bond item of extraordinary rarity.
